On paper the worst result of the season, but in the context of the evening actually not so. With 2 players not turning up, 4 playing out of position (only one of the back 4 being an actual defender), 3 players I have never seen before the night, and Freddie having to play 90 minutes with a suspect ankle after being carried off against Hanworth Villa, all in all we had some mitigating facts. We competed well in the first half and there really wasn't much in it, although they created some chances they should have done better with ... they opened the scoring after 8 minutes when they beat our high line, but we replied after 14 minutes with a well taken 25 yard free kick from Zac Hawker. We nearly got to half time even, but they worked a very good corner set play and their best player headed home to make it 2-1 in the 44th minute. The problem we had was that it was going to be difficult to maintain the level of work and organisation required in the second half with little chance to change things if necessary ... and so it proved. They scored early on after 50 minutes with a well taken goal by their striker who took the ball on his chest, spun and shot home to make it 3-1. We had to push and we kept our attacking formation and for the next 15 minutes we managed to stay in the game and had chances to make it 3-2, which may have changed the way the game went, however, they scored after 67 minutes and from then on the cause was lost. We got one back with a cheeky chip over the keeper by new player Alvin Sarmiento to get to 6-2 but that was all we could achieve ... however, we didn't give up and that's a positive compared with a similar result early in the season. Overall I would prefer to look at the positives of the night - a good team attitude and 3 new faces that were all good players. We had periods in the first half when we played some tidy football and threatened their goal, but on the night Tooting were simply too strong against a team that could only be finalised just before kick off. One game to go, let's hope for better preparation and committment on match day so that the players who are there have a better chance of producing a winning performance. Final score 8-2.
